Care tips 

🌞 Light

• Best in full sun to part shade.
• Needs at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily to flower well.
• In Melbourne, morning sun + some afternoon shade is ideal, especially in hot summers.

💧 Water

• Keep soil consistently moist while establishing (first 12–18 months).
• Once established, water deeply once a week in warmer months.
• In Melbourne’s hot, dry summers: increase watering to 2 times per week, especially if in pots.
• Avoid waterlogging — magnolias don’t like “wet feet.”

🌱 Soil

• Prefers well-draining, slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5–6.5).
• Enrich with organic compost and mulch to keep roots cool.
• If your soil is clay-heavy (common in Melbourne), improve with gypsum, compost, and perlite before planting.

🌿 Fertiliser
